After-Service Health Insurance is offered to WHO retirees under the WHO’s Staff Health Insurance programme. ASHI coverage is optional for eligible former staff members and their dependents. It is available only as a continuation, without interruption between active service and retirement status, of previous active-service coverage under SHI.
Staff Health Rules (effective January 2026)
Unlike the pension, which is common to all UN system organisations, health insurance coverage is not common. Each UN system has its own medical benefit coverage and offers this to its retirees as an option to continue following retirement. After retirement, with the agreement of the WHO retiree, the ASHI premium is deducted by the UNJSPF from the retiree’s monthly benefit, but the examination of claims and reimbursement is managed by the WHO’s SHI department.
